At the Spanish Olive Oil Interprofessional, we are convinced that the effort that the industry has made to innovate has allowed Spain to become the world leader in the industry in quality, production and sales.
This is why one of the Organization’s main objectives is to promote R&D in collaboration with scientific institutions and bodies around the country. We are currently working on the following research areas:
- Health: Olive oils have many health benefits. Therefore, the prevention and fight against breast cancer is one of the lines in which our research activity is framed.
- Agronomy: We focus on the improvement of agronomic practices, searching for mechanized solutions for olive harvesting as well as the use of phytosanitary measures. We also work in various areas in the fight and control of diseases, particularly against verticillium wilt, one of the greatest threats to our olive groves. Another topic of study is the use of mill effluent on the land.
- Product: We promote research on the use of modified atmospheres in the churning process and we are working on an analysis method that allows us to supplement or even replace the panel test as the olive oil rating system.
Finally, the Organization is leading a line of work in which the effect that different production systems have on the development of alkyl esters in extra-virgin olive oil is being analyzed.
It is the constant effort and work that motivates the industry to continue improving, maintaining its global leadership positon, and ensuring that Olive Oils from Spain reach every home in the world in prime condition.
