Protected Designations of Origin and Geographical Indications

Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) and Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) are distinctive quality seals from Europe that are guaranteed and protected by the European Union. They guarantee that foods have been prepared according to the highest quality standards and have characteristics that make them unique, such as certain olive varieties that are closely linked to a well-defined region and a time-honoured tradition. In fact, the main distinguishing feature between the different seals is the place where these oils are obtained, prepared, and packaged.

As a world leader in quality and production, Spain has an extensive range of extra virgin olive oils with both kinds of quality seals: PDO and PGI. The first quality label identifies oils for which all the production phases are carried out in a specific geographical area (cultivation, oil extraction, and packaging), while the second (PGI) only requires part of the cycle to take place in the region, specifically the cultivation and production of the oils, but not the packaging.

Currently, Spain has 32 PDOs and two PGIs for extra virgin olive oil distributed throughout the country. They are a testament to the excellent quality of extra virgin olive oil produced in Spain.
